If you have bought a high-end CPU that cost you a lot, you surely won’t want to use a cheap thermal paste in the cooling system. Since the thermal paste is an essential element in any cooling structure a CPU undergoes, then it is important to pick one that offers the highest thermal conductivity which will increase the heat transfer rate between the CPU and heatsink.
Why a thermal paste is needed
Just putting the cooler/block onto the heatspread (direct metal-metal contact) leaves immense amounts of gaps due to surface imperfections.
